Evaluting Sources Below

The Federation University Australia has created a game that is designed to help student evaluate research materials. Try the CRAAP test to see how well you can identify good information versus bad information.

When was this source published?

How old are the references and data used?

Has this source, or its data, been updated?

Does this type of information get updated?

Is there likely to be more recent information available elsewhere?

Is this information relevant to your assignment? Is there likely to be better information?

Is this aimed at the correct audience?

Who wrote it? What are their qualifications?

Where do they work? Who do they work for?

Are they likely to have a good understanding of this field?

Is the information reliable?

Can you find the original source?

What is the quality of the presentation? Are there significant errors?

Do the conclusions match the data?

Have all sides been considered?

Why has the article been written?

Is there any obvious bias? Is the author or their employer likely to get a benefit out of the recommendations?

Is it recommending a particular course of action or therapy? Does the data support this? Are any alternatives considered?

Writing Help

The University of Minnesota Crookston has an on-campus writing center. Online students have the ability to utilize the writing center as well from their location. The mission of the Writing Center is to promote excellence in writing by providing positive, constructive feedback to writers in all genres and disciplines and at all stages of the writing process.  The Writing Center exists to serve the UMC community by helping writers use language more effectively, supporting a deeper understanding of writing strategies, and fostering strong creative writing communities.

APA Formatting

The most widely used documentation style at UMC is APA, a style which is standardized and regulated by the American Psychological Association. APA is used in the social sciences, some hard sciences, and some humanities disciplines. The newest edition of the APA Style is the 7th. Check out the guide for that edition below.
